Proper equipment selection is essential for reliable and efficient engineering systems. ToolFusion's equipment guides provide selection criteria, specification guidelines, sizing procedures, and procurement considerations for major engineering equipment types across all disciplines.
## Pumps
**Centrifugal Pumps:** Most common pump type. Selection parameters: flow (m³/h), head (m), fluid properties (density, viscosity, temperature), NPSH available, motor power, pump material (cast iron, stainless steel, duplex). API 610 for process applications. End suction vs split case vs vertical turbine.
**Positive Displacement Pumps:** For high-viscosity fluids or precise metering. Types: gear, piston, diaphragm, screw, lobe. Selection based on pressure rating, flow accuracy, solids handling, and fluid compatibility.
## Valves
**Gate Valves:** Full open/close service, minimal pressure drop. API 600 for bolted bonnet, API 602 for compact. Not for throttling.
**Globe Valves:** Throttling and control service. Better flow regulation than gate. Pressure drop higher.
**Ball Valves:** Quarter-turn, bubble-tight shutoff. Floating ball for low pressure, trunnion for high pressure. API 6D.
**Butterfly Valves:** Quarter-turn, lightweight, economical for large diameters. High-performance for higher pressure/temperature.
**Control Valves:** Modulating flow control with actuator and positioner. Selection: Cv based on process conditions, body material, trim type (globe, ball, eccentric plug). IEC 60534.
## Heat Exchangers
**Shell & Tube:** Most common for process applications. TEMA types (BEM, AES, etc.). Selection: tube material, tube count, shell diameter, baffle spacing, design temperature/pressure.
**Plate & Frame:** Compact, high efficiency, easy maintenance. For clean fluids. Plate material, gasket material, port size.
**Air Cooled:** For locations with water scarcity. Fin tube bundles, fan selection, winterization.
## Electrical Equipment
**Transformers:** Oil-filled vs dry type. Selection: kVA rating, primary/secondary voltage, impedance, cooling class (ONAN, ONAF), tap changer, efficiency, temperature rise.
**Motors:** Induction (squirrel cage) most common. Selection: kW rating, speed (2/4/6/8 pole), enclosure (TEFC, ODP, EXP), efficiency class (IE3, IE4), mounting, bearings.
**Switchgear:** MV (5-38kV) and LV (<1000V). Selection: voltage class, continuous current, short circuit rating, arc-resistant, metal-clad vs metal-enclosed.
